Our Year 8 are history makers at Jo Richardson Community School. We are the first year group to consist of 10 tutor groups so we are a pretty big “team”. We have a very strong team ethos in Year 8, believing in the importance of working together and supporting each other in order to be able to ACHIEVE our full potential. In addition we believe in being respectful and well-mannered so that we are able to present ourselves as best as we possibly can.
As Year 8s we are near the beginning of our secondary education but it is amazing how quickly time is going and before we know it we will be starting year 11. Therefore it is vitally important that we strengthen the good foundations that we have built so that we can go on to be successful at GCSE and beyond. Being a good learner and building those solid foundations begins with having high standards, being well organised and having a growth mindset.
We expect our Year 8 students to have high standards in their attendance and punctuality, behaviour and uniform. Good attendance is vital in giving students continuity in their learning and students should aim for 97% attendance or above. Good organisation ensures that students are always well equipped for their lessons, it also means students can plan in advance to manage their time effectively, this will gain more and more importance as students begin their GCSE courses. Finally having a growth mindset is the most effective way to become an independent learner and not giving up when the going gets tough. Learning is not always easy but having the courage to give something a go and thinking of coping strategies to complete a difficult task will ensure you will always make progress.
Year 8 is a great time to take advantage of all the other experiences that the school has to offer. There are a wide range of extra-curricular activities at lunch time and after school every day. There are musical events and drama and dance performances every year, not to mention a variety of different trips including our ACHIEVE days. In addition we have one of the best Student Voice teams in the whole of the UK. Go on – have a go!
We enjoy celebrating our successes and do this regularly both in our assemblies and in tutor time. On the Report Ranking section you will find the names of the latest students to have achieved the best scores in mindset, behaviour and homework.
