At JRCS we are committed to support Early Career Teachers (ECTs) in their continuing professional development (CPD). Many of our former ECTs have progressed to become part of our middle and senior leadership team and the majority of our current ECTs have progressed from ITT placements with us.
Support for ECTs
We aim to run an ECT programme that meets all the statutory requirements underpinned by the ITTECF and provide ECTs with a supportive environment that develops them and equips them with the tools to be effective and successful teachers. We work in partnership with the London District East Teaching School Hub who are the delivery partner for Ambition Institute, our lead provider. All ECTs will have an appointed induction tutor and mentor who will provide monitoring and support throughout the induction period, which usually lasts two years. ECTs will have access to high quality, evidence-based self study modules designed to equip ECTs with the knowledge and skills they need to meet the teaching standards. Instructional coaching, regular professional reviews of progress and opportunities to observe experienced professionals all contribute to improving practice. Formal training conferences and clinics for both ECTs and mentors ensure that all staff are kept up to date with current evidence based research and best practice in education.
School support
The induction tutor devises a programme of induction which begins in the Summer term when the ECT is invited to attend an induction fortnight. ECTs have the opportunity to meet key staff and receive relevant information in preparation for the start of term, as well as gaining a greater insight into the curriculum and ethos of the school. ECTs start on a reduced timetable allowing them to undertake activities in their induction programme which, in their first year, is no more than 90% of a mainscale teacher’s timetable and no more than 95% in Year 2. The Induction Tutor will organise half termly meetings led by a range of facilitators as part of our ongoing CPD programme and will work with mentors to report termly on ECTs’ progress to the Appropriate Body (London District East Teaching School Hub).
