19 May Celebrating DofE awards!
Congratulations!
On Thursday 11th May our annual DofE Celebration Evening was held to celebrate all those who had completed an award during the last 12 months.
It was wonderful to see so many inspiring young people present with their family and friends to celebrate their achievements. It’s amazing to think that our students have contributed to the 3,541,707 hours of volunteering recorded over the last year in the UK which is worth £17,035,611!
During the evening Amber, Sam, Sameer and Chloe talked eloquently about the various aspects of the award. Amber told us about the confidence that participating in bake sales to raise funds for the RSPCA gave her, Sam talked about the commitment that she was able to demonstrate during her participation as a footballer and how it gave her the necessary fitness to complete the expedition, Sameer talked about the challenges of summiting Pen-Y-fan with one member of the group as a wheelchair user, and Chloe talked about the teamwork skills that she developed whilst playing in the school orchestra.
Many congratulations to all those who received their awards on the night: Amber (Year 10), Zubin, Theo, Daniels, Summer, Katelyn, Aimee, Sam, Chloe, Alina, Precious, Nikhil and Murtaza (Year 11). We also acknowledged Sameer’s (Year 13) participation in his gold award, he will hopefully go on to complete his award later this year and attend a celebration at Buckingham Palace following on from that. Unfortunately, Fatimah and Skyla (Year 13) and Reece (ex-student were unable to attend the celebration. Both Fatimah and Skyla have completed their gold awards and Reece hopes to complete his shortly. Thank you to all those who supported the event especially Ms Keane, Miss Campbell and Bill Lockton.
On Monday 15th May I met up with Lauren (ex-student) and Skyla (Year 13) outside Buckingham Palace where they had just celebrated their gold awards in the presence of HRH Prince Edward The Duke of Edinburgh along with a number of celebrities including Ade Adepotane and Germaine Genus. It was a fantastic day where over 6,000 young people celebrated their gold awards. We went on to celebrate further over lunch.
We wish these two young women well for the future. Lauren is just completing her final teaching practice and has interviews for posts in primary schools coming up. Skyla has just finished her BTEC Business in Year 13 here at Jo Richardson.
We look forward to many more awards to celebrate next year!
