02 Dec Congratulations to Reece Ward, 8F
2016 Jack Petchey Outstanding Achievement Awards
Reece won a ‘Highly Commended’ award at the 2016 Jack Petchey Outstanding Achievement Awards in Panathlon. The awards are for young people with disabilities who have grown, excelled, overcome, and been inspired through sport.
Reece collected his award from Paralympic swimming champion and Panathlon Ambassador, Liz Johnson, in a ceremony on Wednesday 23rd November at the Olympic Suite in John Lewis Stratford City.
Before joining JRCS Reece was unable to participate in PE or sport but now he takes part in PE lessons and regularly attends the school Panathlon Club. He attended the borough trials for the Panathlon team in January and was chosen for wheelchair slalom and relay.
Reece trained at every opportunity and in each round of the competition set personal best times. He carried this through to the London Champions Final at the Copper Box Arena in June where he won a gold medal, achieving yet another personal best and helping Barking and Dagenham to win the overall trophy.
Reece has also competed in boccia and is part of the borough boccia club. He attended a residential week at Trewern in March where he took part in all the activities. His positive attitude to improving his performance led to him gaining the school’s annual PE Department Award for the most improved boy in Year 7.
Well done Reece!
