Duke of Edinburgh Award News
Year 8 students planning for Year 9
I had the pleasure the week before last of meeting with the new recruits in Year 8 who are starting Bronze award at the start of Year 9. Congratulations to all of you who have taken the trouble to apply and made a commitment to tackle four aspects of the award during Year 9. All Year 8 bronze recruits now have a blue card to help them plan their activities that they will start in Year 9. Now is also the time before the end of July to ensure that the £20 registration payments for the Bronze award are credited on ParentPay. This will enable an eDofE account to be set up for each student so that they can record their progress towards each aspect of the award online. The meeting after school on Tuesday 5th July is postponed until next term. If students have any questions regarding setting up their activities, please see Ms Montague by the end of the day on Friday 8th July.
Success for All once again on Bronze Award qualifying expedition
On Friday 10th June, a group of ten students set out on their Bronze qualifying expedition in Epping Forest. They started (and finished) at the Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge at the edge of the forest near Loughton. The students’ aim of their expedition was to work out a series of games and activities to keep themselves entertained whilst on their walk. One group even turned a sleeping mat into a board game, based around their experiences of completing the award. The second day was particularly challenging with quite a few hills to climb as they navigated their way through the forest. Also, the skies looked pretty threatening and group 2 were caught in a torrential downpour as they finished the last leg of their walk, arriving back at the minibus soaked through!
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the expedition on getting to the finish: Georgina Hart, Matthew Norris (both 10A), Abigail Jacobs 10B, Paris Tankard, Nathan Batt, Jyotika Ahtty (all 10D), Hanan Abdulhamid, Faith Barovbe, Yasmine Raji, and Karoline Derlukiewicz (all 10H).
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who supported this expedition and without whom the trip would not have been possible: Mr Dignam (who assessed the group), Mr Kilminster, Mr Hill and Bill Lockton (D of E volunteer). Thanks to all for giving up your time and for your dedication and enthusiasm for the award.
