09 Mar Panathlon Round 2 Success!
It was my pleasure on Tuesday 6th March to accompany five students who were taking part in Round 2 of the Panathlon competition. This event took place at UEL Sports Dock. Barking and Dagenham had reached the cup competition after winning Round 1 and had to compete against the Boroughs of Redbridge, Newham and Hackney to get through to the London Finals at the Copper Box in June later this year.
As expected the competition was much tougher than in the last round. Reece Ward 9F and Victor Oso 8H faced stiff competition in the Power Wheelchair slalom, against some very fast chairs and came away with Bronze medals. Tristan Filbert 8A fought hard, alongside his team mates, to win two out of the three Polybat matches to gain a Silver medal. When it came to the running races , both Lewis Chilver 8C and Leticha Correia Cabral 8C, ran excellent legs in their relay races, both achieving Gold medals. Those of you who remember teams in past years will remember Georgina Hart who left Jo Richardson last year. She is still entitled to compete as she is a Borough resident and achieved a Gold medal and a perfect score of 56 in the precision bean bag.
At the end of the afternoon came the news that we had all been eagerly waiting for; the Borough Team had made it through to the London Champions Final in the Copper Box at the Olympic Park in June for a third year running.
Commenting on the day, Leticha said ‘It was nice to meet new people’. Tristan added ‘I am excited to go to the Copper Box Arena’. Lewis was ‘Happy and excited, I was half and half confident about making it through’. Victor said ‘It was great and I feel overwhelmed’, and Reece summed up his day saying ‘Great fun!’
Congratulations to all those who took part for their excellent behaviour and fantastic performances. Thanks go also to Mr Bailey who helped out with the trip and supported the team on their way to victory.
