05 Mar UCL Sutton Scholars Programme
Finding out about GSCE options, and career paths
On the 14th, 15th and 16th of February, we attended a programme at the UCL campus (University College London), which taught us more about GSCE options, and career paths. A select few students from JRCS went to this programme, but many students did take this opportunity and applied. UCL is one of the best universities, ranking 7th best in the world!
The university was founded in 1826 by philosopher Jeremy Bentham, and was the first to allow people to attend regardless of religion and gender. The university has a very large campus. Each day that we arrived at the campus we were expected to be at a different building, for example: The Astronomy building and South Cloisters building, which were about three minutes apart from each other in Central London, as we did not know where to go it could get quite stressful. When we did arrive we were put into separate groups which meant that we had to make friends ourselves, therefore, fully experiencing what university would be like.
During our time at UCL we gathered information from various sources. With our newly obtained knowledge we were then able to discuss personal opinions and conduct official debates. One of our main debates regarded the matter of colonisation on Mars which was very eye-opening when discussing with our peers. We learnt about various linguistic techniques and analysis on multiple sources from ancient times. The experience unlocked new doors and knowledge of career paths such as anthropology and philosophy. We enjoyed these events at UCL extensively.
