28 May Year 12 First Give Final
On Monday 24th May, Year 12 participated in the First Give final. First Give are a charity who aim to inspire and empower young people to take action to make a positive change in society and Year 12 have spent this term doing just that. Each form was tasked to research a local charity that they wished to support, create a form of social action to raise awareness for this charity and potentially raise money for this charity. Students in each form had to present their ideas and actions in small groups before deciding on a group to represent them in the final. First Give also supported our students in advance of the final with a presentation workshop in which they fully engaged and really enjoyed.
The final was hotly contested and our guest judges (Mr Smith, Headteacher, Mr Rackstraw, Assistant Headteacher, Tim Stillwell, Dragon’s Den participant, businessman and friend of Jo Richardson and Sophie Standring, First Give) had a tricky task picking the winners. Our students represented a range of local charities, Salvation Army, Victim Support, BHR, Respect, Shelter and Mind and coordinated varied social action ranging from silent protests to a quiz to raise awareness. In the end it was 12D’s presentation and social action that won the final meaning that First Give donated £1000 on their behalf to their charity – Respect. 12D organised a Year 12 football match with a cover charge to raise money and gave out leaflets at the game to help raise awareness. Their presentation was engaging and well delivered by Ryan, Orit, Solomon, Judith and Temi and they should be very proud of their achievements. Ryan and Faith in 12B also won individual certificates for their delivery in their respective presentations.
Congratulations to all winners. It was lovely to be able to run the First Give final after a year of battling Covid restrictions and wondering if we could ever get the programme off the ground and Year 12 should be very proud of their resilience and creativity in some fairly challenging circumstances.
Well done Year 12.
