30 Jun Year 9 Bronze Expedition success!
Well done!
On 20th and 21st June seven students from Year 9 who have been completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award within the curriculum took part in their qualifying expedition.
Following a shopping expedition to buy provisions for the menu that they had planned, the students headed out for Epping Forest and a three hour long trek to their campsite in High Beech. The two groups had an aim for their expeditions; Alif, JJ, Lily and Nalini’s aim was to make badges for other members of the group, and Daniel, Rafael and Charlie were aiming to discover more about the myths and legends surrounding Epping Forest.
The weather was hot and humid and so everyone was relieved to arrive at the shady campsite in the forest and cool off. They then set about putting up tents and also going into the forest to collect wood for a campfire. Dinners were then prepared which included pasta, chicken curry, and cake and chocolate custard.
After dinner all the students had a go at trying to light a campfire without using matches, they very nearly achieved this. However, due to the earlier rain, the wood was far too damp, and the flames shouldered and went out. We were going to roast marsh mallows and make chocolate bananas on the fire; however Miss Hall saved the day with the idea of a chocolate fondue, which everyone found delicious.
After a good night’s sleep and breakfast, the group continued on their way towards their finish point at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge. At one point, whilst trying to visit Loughton Camp, which legend tells was the hideout of the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin, they encountered horses and people in medieval dress filming a comic historical drama – very exciting.
At Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, they learned about the 500 year history of the building. The frame having been completed by Henry VIII and the walls later infilled by his daughter Elizabeth I. Elizabeth is even said to have ridden her pony up the stairs!
It was a real privilege to accompany such enthusiastic students and see them achieve the completion of their expedition. Many thanks also go to the accompanying staff who helped out enormously and gave huge encouragement to the students: Miss Lea, Mr Hill and Miss Hall.
