22 Apr Berlin 2016
We are pleased to announce that another successful JRCS tip to Berlin has returned safely. 13 students and the staff had a wonderful four days, see details below:
Update: Monday 25th @ 14:53
We are now in the hotel preparing to take the train to the airport and make our way home. This morning went as planned and we visited the Topography of Terror and then the Jewish Memorial. The students have showed great resilience and only now are starting to flag a little. As of now the flight is due to depart on time so we should be landing at 19:25 local time and hopefully back at school about 21:00. Any delays will be posted here.
Update: Sunday 24th @ 17:58
Today we made two important visits that relate very closely to the Y13 course. We visited the Olympic Stadium which hosted the Berlin Olympics in 1936. The building is one of the few Nazi built structures still remaining in Berlin and provided an insight into Nazi architecture and propaganda. We also went to the Wannsee Villa, where leading Nazis met in 1942 to discuss the way the Jewish populations under Nazi rule would be treated in the final years of the war. It is a treasure trove of original source material relating to the development of the Holocaust.
We are now back at the hotel, having a rest, before our final dinner together. Tomorrow we will visit the Topography of Terror, a museum focusing on the Nazi state’s use of terror and then we will visit the Jewish memorial and Hitler’s bunker before we fly home.
We are pleased to report everyone is well and having a great time and the sun is still out!!
Update: Saturday 23rd @ 16:51
Friday evening we dined at the local sausage house, where we enjoyed a traditional German band play local hits such as “Don’t You Want Me Baby”. Ms Duncan and Mr Hayes arrived in time to see everyone before bed.
Today we breakfasted on continental sausage and cheese before heading to the Sachenhausen concentration camp, in the suburbs north of Berlin. As it is each year, it was a time for sober reflection for all of us.
Now we rest and eat back at the hotel before climbing the Bundestag Dome to watch the sun set this evening.
Update: Friday 22nd @ 17:53
We are pleased to report that the 2016 sixth form history trip to Berlin has landed safely.
We checked in to our hotel and then spent the afternoon walking from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate and Bundestag.
The weather has been great and we are now back at the hotel for a couple of hours’ rest before the Bavarian sausage house this evening.
