Orang-utan. – “Man of the Forest”
For those that did not know Orang-utans are humans’ closest relation sharing 97% of our DNA.
We were up for breakfast slightly later than recent mornings and had lots to choose from including scrambled eggs, sausages, toast, beans.
After loading our bags onto the coach we set off to the Orang-utan sanctuary within the National Park. We were met by Chris who is a volunteer there from the Uk working with the Orang-utans Appeal Uk. The organisation was set up by Susan Seward and works alongside the sanctuary. We learnt a lot of facts from Chris and a film about the Orang-utans, the sanctuary, how we could adopt an (don’t worry no-one is bring one home) and how we might get to volunteer in the future.
We first saw the nursery feeding table then as we walked to the main feeding platform an orang-utan got to within 3m of us making his way to the platform.
After the sanctuary we made our way by bus to the Kinabatangan River. Here we hopped onto a. small boat to get across to the lodge. Once settled in we got back on the boat for an amazing ride down the river. We saw the following wildlife: Hornbill, Crocodile, Macac monkeys, probes us monkeys and the rare sighting of the Stockbill Kingfisher.
Today was Avery eventful yet relaxing day looking forward to tomorrow for a pre sunrise boat ride to see if we can spot the Pygmy elephants and the to the Gomantong Caves before our 6 hr journey back to KK.
