Thursday 12th July
Day 4 – Start of Project Phase
Blogger – Alex G
It was an early start this morning as we woke up at 6am to finish getting ready to travel to our project. Naturally lots of people were still tired and emotionally drained from watching the England game but everyone was packed and had eaten breakfast by 7, where we were picked up by the mini-buses. We were split between 3 coaches before beginning the journey to Sapulot.
We spent around 2hours catching up on sleep whilst on the road, a quick stop, then back on the road for an hour before stopping for some Roti. Back in the buses and up to the jungle where we got some amazing views. Some people continued to sleep but others managed to have conversations about the views and what was coming up. Next stop saw us exchange mini-buses for 4×4 vehicles. From here we went through a series of bumpy roads for around 30 minutes before finally arriving at our accommodation.
When we got there the place we were staying in was much nicer than most of us expected. We had time to put our bags in rooms and relax for a bit before Dutuk Richard welcomed us and then served lunch for us. The food was abundant including Boar, deer, fish and fried chicken plus many others. Once we had finished lunch we went out to the area where we are going to complete our project, met up with some of the people we would be working with especially Virgil and Bedeley. The local community welcomed us with hot drinks and some sweet treats including sweetened banana and something similar to a doughnut. We then set off back to our digs.
Once back we cleaned up, relaxed before yet more food for diner! Again lots to choose from including chicken in soy sauce, Pakistan Choi. We then debriefed after dinner, relaxed a little and headed for our bunks.
Ready for hard labour tomorrow….
