27 Feb Students have a rewarding time aboard the Barge Haybay
It was my pleasure during last weekend to accompany a group of Year 7 and Year 9 students on a residential weekends reward trip aboard the Barge Haybay (part of Newham’s Fairplay Outdoor Education Centre). This group of students have been regularly attending a first aid course after school each Wednesday in order to gain a St John’s Ambulance Young First Aider qualification. Some students are using this as part of their bronze D of E award, and others are coming along in order to learn skills which may mean that one day they could be in a position to save someone’s life.
The Centre instructors, Dom and Scott, and the other Sea Cadet instructors, Gary Barratt, Kay Slaughter and Fenella Bolton also spoke very highly of our students and their excellent behaviour and achievements across the whole weekend, from helping to prepare their own meals, completing a canoeing and walking expedition to caving, high ropes and finally flying through the air on a giant swing.
The students involved were:
Nicola Hicks 7H, Bayley Cooper 7I, Yewande Ogini 9B, Faizaan Mahmoud 9C,
Billy Kemp 7D, Edward Stemarthe, Temi Oluwole, Faizaan Mahmoud all 9C,
Alperen Oktay, Ryan Maun, Lauren Simson, Deanna Allman and Emily Fawsitt all 9D.
Congratulations to all the students named above on continually making me very proud of you all, and many thanks to all the instructors from London Area Sea Cadets who worked so hard to make the weekend possible. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Seb Britton for his work with us and the London Area Sea Cadets for fully funding this fantastic project.
