18 Jul Team 3 – Project Overview
A brief outline of our project work.
9th – 14th July 2016:
Team 3 project work was based in escuela Epifania. This was a school based on the outskirts of Grenada. This was our base for the next six days.
We were tasked with building a path between the toilet block and the school as currently they are not connected and when it rains the land turns to a mud swamp. In the morning we would work on construction projects and in the afternoon we had the task of entertaining local children and learning about Nicaragua culture.
Working with local builders the team constructed the path within 2 days. The rest of the time was used to clear weeds from the school grounds and to build water channels to divert the monsoon rains. This was needed otherwise the water just collected around the school. Our final project was to extend a wall around the toilet block. The team learnt many new skills during this time.
In the afternoon the team played with the local children and tried to teach them basic English. This included a Nicaragua vs England football match, England triumphed 3-2. We even had time to fit in a game of Rounders where Miss Branch’s team were victorious against Ms Boller’s.
We had local volunteers come in to teach us how to make tortillas, local bracelets and attempt to teach us the fine art of salsa dancing.
We stayed on the project site during our time, camping in the classrooms. At the end we felt we had achieved a lot but we were looking forward to the next stage of our expedition, the trek!
