Our natural alarm clock of howling monkeys, cows, pigs and the cockerel woke us up again. This time it was joined by an ants nest near a couple of tents (who did not heed the warning about food in tents!!).
Eager to get the project finished we were divided into two teams and given a side of the compound each to get the white Walls and bars completed, and the blue doors and walls. David, our Ometepe DIY expert, worked on the plumbing in of the toilets. We managed to work really hard and in a focused manner as the children were not in due to it being the weekend. However a few students did appear and disappeared to another part of the compound with brooms. We were later told that we had inspired them, by what we were doing for them and their school, and they had turned up to clean up some other classrooms!
At lunch one of the local people brought us some new fruit to try – tasted a little like sweet avocado. We have been very spoilt by the local people and staff at the school as every day we have been given bags of fruit.
Somehow we got the jobs finished and were able to add some finishing touches on each door of the classroom. We had brought stencils with us of different animals and put a different animal for each class. We also gave the headteacher a stencilled door plus the storeroom – really made a difference to a plain door.
The final finishing touch was a stencil that Ms Dormer made showing that the redecoration had been done by JRCS.
We all got round the stencil to get our final picture. The headteacher was so pleased with our efforts and could not thank us enough times.
We were all quite emotional when we left and wished we could have done more. When we got back to camp we relaxed, had dinner and reflected on our project.
I was instructed by staff and Joe that I had to lead in the style of a fluffy white sheep, this proved challenging at times but by the end I was floating like a cloud!
