Team Managua Project Team Overview
What did we expect, walk into and leave??
Our written brief from True Adventure was to work in a school on Ometepe Island with an organisation called UGO, who oversee the projects on the island. It told us that we would be painting the toilets and possibly interact with the students.
Prior to leaving for our adventure we met as a group and organised getting some things to take out with us. We bought some sporting equipment, some painting stencils and fun toys.
When we walked into the project we realised the job was much bigger than we expected. We were painting the outside to 8 classroom blocks – this included lots of bars on Windows! We also had 4 toilets to reprint and 2 were going to be renewed and plumbed in as flushing.
The 4 days of extreme humidity did little for work rate, but our motivation kept building the more we saw the children. The hour we spent in the classroom on the first day was really a powerful boost. Having cracked on and made good progress we were invited to a presentation from the school – this again inspired us to complete the project. Poems, songs, dance and a clear thankfulness for our help was overwhelming.
Being able to hand over and explain our school booklet was really great. Explaining where we come from and showing differences in food, currency was good fun. After the presentation we used some of the toys we bought them and played catch, skipping and football with the children.
On the final day we powered through and managed to finish the hard job we had originally been presented with. Due to our hard work and determination we managed to add some finishing touches to our jobs, such as placing animal stencils on doors and one on the toilet which was created by Ms Dormer showing that the school was decorated by Team Managua from JRCS.
We are very proud to have completed our project to a good standard and know that our small contribution will make a big difference to many lives.
